What you find when you search for scholarships
Look harder for scholarships
Today as I planned this post I placed myself in your (my audiences) shoes.
I searched google for 2 things:
1) August 2011 Scholarships
2) Free Scholarships
The reason being is because sometimes you have to think outside the box. My girlfriend of three years argued for the first year with me about how she wouldn’t get a scholarship. She qualifies for 100% free tuition and she gets a refund check from her pell grant totaling a few thousand dollars for her pocket. Remember she argued with me for a year, thats right me, the expert. Anyhow I realize in order for my audience to have success they have to read about experiences they can relate to. I know atleast a handful of you just read that and had a thought about a friend, an advisor, a coach or even a parent whom they argued with about not finding a scholarship????
Searching for Free Scholarships like you
My next point is that today I spent a little while searching like you probably have done or are still doing. I have to tell you I know off them top of my head the kinds of things you find on the first few pages of google: Fastweb, scholarship experts, scholarshipships.com and a few others etc.
But you don’t find FAFSA or other useful sources of scholarships and financial aid. FAFSA is government funds so they are going to be straight forward as possible. You fill out your application and they determine how much you qualify for. I was home recently talking with my mom about how I didn’t apply with FAFSA for 3 years. Then when I finally applied I didn’t qualify. It occured to me that I had no clue whether or not I’d qualify. FAFSA uses this complicated formula that the average person can’t figure out. I should have just applied and I didn’t. I tell people all the time, I don’t care how much money your parents make or where you live FILL OUT THE FAFSA. Oh and it is
free.
Also another piece of advice go well beyond the first page. If you search FREE SCHOLARSHIPS on google you get 36,500,000 results. You absolutely need to go well beyond the first page. You never know what you may find on the 20th page that you didn’t find on the 1st or 2nd page. Also knowing how difficult it is to find a scholarship do the right thing and help others. Spread the word, I was disgusted a few months ago in a course for my 2nd Masters Degree…Anyhow a student was discussing the lottery for good public schools and he said I wouldn’t tell my friend about it until I got in so it wouldn’t mess up my chances. I thought how horrible and how selfish of him. But people think like this everyday, and you don’t need too. If I can’t get something and some else can I am happy to see that person succeed.

Gates Millenium Scholarships Applications now Available
Gates Millenium Scholars Program
I know most of you will know who Bill Gates is, founder of Microsoft. He and Melinda Gates are founders of the Gates Millenium Scholars.
This program is geared towards helping low income minority students achieve the goal of attending college with a scholarship. The following is an excerpt taken from the website providing the free scholarship:
For students entering college for the first time in the fall 2012, the GMS 2012 Scholarship Application online process is now open. The deadline for all submission is Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. EST
GMS will select 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice.
For those who don’t think they will win a scholarship from the Gates Millenium Program I’ll say this. My college roomate/football teammate’s girlfriend went to Delaware State University on a free scholarship provided the Gates Millenium Scholars Program. The website says the following about recipients: We will help more than 27,000 low-income students get to college by 2016.
